In
August 2000, members of Westside Economic Alliance and county
and city officials in Washington County agreed to undertake
a strategic economic study to understand the economy of the
Westside, its origins, and to recommend a strategy for the future.
A strategic effort called the "Westside Consortium
for Economic Health" was formed. Led by Westside Economic
Alliance, the consortium was made up and funded by the Multnomah-Washington
County Regional Investment Board, Westside businesses, governments,
and civic groups.
The results of The
Westside Story economic
study were powerful. Over the past 20 years, the Westside has
emerged as a major driver of the regional economy, the center
of the state's vital high-technology community, and home to
nearly one-quarter of the region's residents.
The Westside Story provided the region's decision-makers and
business leaders with a better understanding of how the Westside
economy reached its current state of development, and the choices
the region will face in the next two decades that will influence
the future of the Westside. |

In
2003, Phase II of The Westside Story
focused on developing an economic strategy adaptable
to the new demands and conditions of the region. The Westside
Economic Strategy built upon the findings of The
Westside Story, and outlines specific strategies in which
businesses, non-profit organizations and government leaders
can work together to build a strong and healthy economy, and
vibrant, livable communities.
Hundreds
of Westside citizens from the public, private and non-profit
sectors met in dozens of public forums and meetings to develop
this vision and strategy for the Westside economy. The approach
calls for a "smart" Westside: A place of talented
people, innovative economies, and vibrant communities. The
Westside Economic Strategy focuses on four main themes:
- People,
- Places,
- Clusters,
and
- Leadership.
The Westside
Economic Strategy Committee has mapped out action plans for
each of the above four areas, and has identified local partners,
critical first steps, and specific objectives to be implemented.
